Friday a week ago we launched the 2008 Melbourne Stencil Festival with PosteSF, a competition for this year's festival poster. The theme was Topical Current Events, and submission reflected on child labor, women rights, homelessness, war, preception of graffiti amongst others. A dozen works were short-listed and a winning design chosen by the festival team. The winner is Daniel Melim, Brasilian artist and Stencil Festival exhibitor since 2005, with a photographic print of street art in Sao Paulo. He has been awarded $500 in cash and will be one of the featured artists in the Five Continents - Six Artists exhibition at the festival in August. Runner up, and winner by popular vote on the launch night at FamousWhenDead Gallery was ELK from Canberra with his portrait piece of Jimmy, a homeless person on the streets of the capital.
